How a day is chosen
Thirteen nakshatras are held favourable — Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Chitra, Swati, Anuradha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, Shatabhisha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. The weekdays are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Rikta tithis and the new moon are removed. For beginning construction, both Panchak and Chaturmas are excluded — as for house-entry, since neither is considered suitable for laying a foundation.

Common questions
Are Bhoomi Pujan and Shilanyas the same?
Slightly different as customs — Bhoomi Pujan honours the land, Shilanyas lays the first stone. The muhurat tests are much the same for both.
Why is a foundation not laid during Panchak?
The tradition holds that work begun then may have to be repeated. So neither construction nor house-entry is undertaken during it.
What if I miss the muhurat?
Take the next auspicious day — the list runs forward. Starting in haste on any available day is not what the tradition suggests.
