How a day is chosen
Marriage carries the most tests. Eleven nakshatras are held favourable — Rohini, Mrigashira, Magha, Uttara Phalguni, Hasta, Swati, Anuradha, Mula, Uttara Ashadha, Uttara Bhadrapada and Revati. The weekdays are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Rikta tithis (4, 9, 14) and the new moon are removed. Three longer periods are also excluded: Chaturmas, Kharmas (the Sun in Sagittarius or Pisces), and the combustion of Jupiter or Venus — without which a marriage muhurat is considered incomplete.
How to read the result
One point on which the tradition is divided is not hidden here: some lineages accept the full moon for marriage and some do not. It is excluded here, because following the majority view is the safer course. And these are general days — a real marriage muhurat weighs both partners’ charts, the Moon’s position and Chandrashtama.
Common questions
What is the combustion of Jupiter or Venus?
When these planets come very close to the Sun their light is lost to view — that is combustion. The tradition avoids marriage then, since both are held to be the principal significators of marriage.
Why is marriage avoided during Chaturmas?
Chaturmas is regarded as Vishnu’s period of rest. It is a religious and social custom rather than an astronomical rule — but it is so widely observed that excluding it is the safer choice.
