In Indian astrology “rashi” means the Moon’s sign, not the Sun’s. That is why the sign you get here is often different from the “zodiac sign” given on Western sites — and neither is a mistake.
What this calculator tells you
This finds your Moon sign — the sign the Moon occupied at your birth. In Indian astrology, when someone asks “what is your sign”, this is what they mean, not the Sun sign. You also get your birth nakshatra and its pada, since both come out of the same calculation.
How the calculation works
The Moon’s true position is computed for your birth moment, then the Lahiri ayanamsa is subtracted — this is what converts a tropical position into a sidereal (Vedic) one. The 30° segment it falls into is your sign. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the sign can change within a single day — which is why the time of birth matters.
How to read the result
The sign is given along with its ruling planet — that planet matters most when you later read your dasha and transits. The nakshatra pada (1 to 4) is what the navamsa is built from. A sign on its own does not describe your life; it is one part of a whole chart.
Common questions
What is the difference between Sun sign and Moon sign?
The Sun sign comes from the Sun’s position — that is the “zodiac sign” of Western astrology. The Moon sign comes from the Moon and is the primary one in Indian astrology. It is perfectly normal for the two to differ.
What if I don’t know my birth time?
The sign can still be found, but with less confidence — the Moon changes sign every 2¼ days. If the time is wrong, the nakshatra and pada will almost certainly be wrong.
Does the sign change over a lifetime?
No. The birth sign is fixed. What changes is transit — where the Moon is today is a separate matter.
