What this calculator tells you
This finds your Ascendant (Lagna) — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment of your birth. The entire chart is framed on this one value: change the Ascendant and every planet changes house.
How the calculation works
Local sidereal time is derived from your birth time and place, then combined with the latitude to find the point rising at that instant. The Lahiri ayanamsa is then subtracted. The Ascendant shifts roughly every two hours — which is why both the time and the place of birth are required, and a date alone is not enough.
How to read the result
The ruler of the rising sign is your Lagnesha — the planet whose condition carries most weight in a reading. All eleven remaining houses are counted from the Ascendant. The whole-sign (Parashari) system is used here, so the entire rising sign forms the first house.
Common questions
How is the Ascendant different from the Moon sign?
The Moon sign comes from the Moon, the Ascendant from the horizon. The Moon sign changes every 2¼ days, the Ascendant every two hours — so the Ascendant depends far more sharply on the birth time.
What if my birth time is off by 15 minutes?
Usually the Ascendant stays the same, but near a boundary it can shift. If it does, every planet moves house — and the whole reading changes with it.
Why does the birth place matter?
Because the rising point depends on latitude. For the same instant, Delhi and Chennai can have different Ascendants.
